Dilip Chhabria, one of India’s most renowned automobile designers, is celebrated for pioneering the custom car modification industry in India through his company, DC Design. Born in Mumbai, Chhabria had a passion for cars from a young age and pursued his interest academically and professionally. He studied in the U.S. at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. After his studies, he worked briefly with General Motors, where he gained valuable industry experience before returning to India with ambitions to make a mark in automotive design.

In 1992, he reimagined a Maruti Gypsy, drawing widespread admiration and launching his career in custom automotive design. The following year, he established Dilip Chhabria Design Centre Pvt. Ltd (DC) to offer innovative design and prototype solutions for both business and individual clients. Over three decades, Chhabria and his team have crafted about 800 unique custom-built vehicles, each one a testament to his vision.

Starting modestly, DC Design initially focused on designing unique accessories for cars, such as custom mirrors, bumpers, and fenders, which quickly gained popularity among enthusiasts seeking individuality in their vehicles. Over time, with the visionary approach of Mr. Dilip Chhbaria, bold innovation, and keen understanding of global B2B and B2C markets—combined with an extensive range of products including cars, SUVs, MUVs, HCVs, LCVs, specialty and luxury vehicles, and even aircrafts—have led to the creation of iconic designs for high-profile clients including Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, cricketers like Virat Kohli, and numerous corporate leaders, as well as collaborations with leading brands such as Aston Martin, GM, BMW, Ford, Tata, Maruti, and Toyota. These designs were showcased at all international motor shows at Frankfurt, New York, Paris, Beijing and Delhi.

One of DC Design’s most notable accomplishments came with the introduction of its first concept car, the DC Avanti, in 2012. Marketed as “India’s first sports car,” the Avanti boasted a bold, futuristic design and was powered by a Renault engine. Designed and produced ahead of its time, DC Avanti cemented Chhabria’s reputation as a pioneer in India’s car design landscape, showcasing that the country could produce its own high-performance, aesthetically captivating vehicles. This project elevated DC Design’s status, attracting global attention and setting a foundation for Indian automotive engineering in the performance and luxury markets.

Chhabria’s career soared to new heights, marking a milestone in January 2003 when his stunning V8 Vantage prototype for Aston Martin was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show. In 2004, he gained widespread recognition in India with his on-screen debut in Tarzan: The Wonder Car, featuring a modified Toyota MR2, which quickly became a national icon.
